Bewitched: I, Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha Review

 

Supernatural comedies are a very rare thing to find indeed but in the sixties we had quite a few of them on TV. Well I thought that i'd take a look at the debut episode of what is perhaps the most well known supernatural comedy out there just because the show itself is very vastly approaching it's forty ninth birthday and so then join me as I review the episode that really did introduce the world to a really likable witch with the episode in question being called simply just "I, Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha" enjoy.

The plot of this episode while on his honeymoon regular human Darrin discovers that his new wife Samantha is hiding something from him. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty not that bad as it was a rather simple plot that was very easy to follow along with as well as being both really engaging and very entertaing as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this episode is Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens and Dick York as Darrin Stephens. Also starring in this episode is Agnes Moorehead as Endora , Gene Blakely as Dave , Lindsay Workman as Doctor Koblin , Paul Barselow as Bartender Al , Nancy Kovack as Sheila Sommers , John Graham as Man Speaking With Samantha At The Dinner Table , Bryan O'Byrne as The Hotel Desk Clerk and José Ferrer as The Narrator.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty alot better then what I thought that it would be. As the acting in alot of debut episodes usually isn't that good as the cast are still getting used to each other and are still trying to find their characters and as such to see good acting in this episode was really well and truly surprising to me.

Very sadly you can't watch this episode as it was originally intended to be seen as all of season 1 and season 2 were shot in black in white and have all since been colorized. I'm not against shows originally made in black and white being colorized but by doing that and not giving people the chance to see the episode as it was originally shot is were I take issue because it says that the black and white version of the episode should be lost to the sands of time and yet by turning these black and white episodes into color the show and the episode loses something that would have been present in the black and white version of the episode. 

What I really liked about this episode is just how likable Darrin and Samantha are which was something that I wasn't expecting to be the case. As this was the shows first episode it would have been understandable to make one of the two characters fairly unlikable to begin with but it seems that the hows writer and creator Sol Saks understood that you need to make these characters actually likable characters if you really want us the audience to spend twenty plus minuets watching them in this very episode.

In a rather understandable move I didn't really buy into the romance between Darrin and Samantha which would usually be a bad thing. However in this case it is slightly understandable as the episode isn't that long and so they really can't afford to spend alot of time in setting up their romance and making it believable especially as this is the first episode of a TV show and so they have over twenty plus episodes in this shows first season to make their relationship and marriage seem fully believable and while that is something that should have been done in this episode given this episodes shorter running time and the nature of sitcoms in general it's fully understandable as to why they didn't do it in this first episode of the show. 

I don't know why they ran with a someone tries to break up their marriage plot line for the shows first  episode. As that type of plot line would be much more better served for being a later episode in this shows run as here we don't really know these characters and so putting them in that kind of a situation just won't work as we're not really given a reason to want to see these characters succeed and while this episode does give us a good villain in Sheila Sommers we don't really get to find out why she's trying to break up their marriage which is a shame because she is a rather fun and often times funny character in this episode.

Now then this episode has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly twenty five minuets and fifty one seconds. Which for this episode is a pretty solid running time bearing in mind that this is the first episode of a TV show and some things like character personalities don't have to be laid out in the first episode as they have well over twenty plus episodes in this shows first season to get the characters personalities across to the viewers and this episode really is helped by the fact that it has some really god pacing to it as well.

So now then since this is a comedy that means that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. While this episode does have some pretty bad jokes in it those are very few and far between with the episode featuring more good jokes then bad jokes in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall this was a rather solid to what be a truly iconic sitcom that is still being referenced as 2021 thanks tom Wandavision which just goes to show you just how good this episode was and how good this show was as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very episode in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very episode really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.

Some TV Shows That Could Make Decent Animated Shows

Animated fans there are alot of shows out there and alot of them should get animated shows and I thought that for once i'd do something a little bit different and tell you some of the shows that I think could make at least a semi decent animated show. Please note that some of these shows are currently airing on TV and I might not say which network they should air on but I can guarantee that they all would make decent animated shows.

The Walking Dead

The ratings for this show have been dipping for years but picture this what if as well as the live action version there was a more faithful and possibly more gory animated version. To me that just sounds pure awesome and it could be more faithful because none of the characters would age so it could work plus this is a mega popular franchises so it's shocking to me that no one has thought of this idea heck even an animated spin off would work.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Now this is interesting because a pilot for an animated spin off of Buffy The Vampire Slayer does indeed exist but its only four minuets long. That being said tho I honestly think that this show should happen because of the fact that Buffy still to this very day remains popular with both a comic book continuation and comic book reboot going on at the exact time so to me it makes sense to make an animated spin off as well because of the fact that you can do more with animation then you can with live action.

Game Of Thrones

Not gonna lie this show right here was the main reason for me wanting to do this post because I am a huge Game Of Thrones fan i've seen every episode I own all the books heck I even played the terrible console game a few years ago. Now obviously doing another straight adaptation so soon after the TV show has ended just won't work in fact it would be utterly pointless but it could happen in say twenty years from now and then you could include from the forthcoming books and maybe all of the add on books as well so you could go into more detail then the live action show can at this point.

Any Of the Marvel Netflix Shows

This one might be tricky to do just because Disney owns Marvel and if you've seen any of the Marvel Netflix shows then you'll know that they aren't exactly kid friendly. However that being said it would still be nice to get a continuation for any of these shows given the fact that alot of them ended on a cliff hanger but tho if i'm being honest chances of any of these shows getting a continuation is very slim at best but we can always hope and who knows we might get a decent season of The Defenders out of it.

Bewitched

Now this show did get an animated movie spin off called Tabitha and Adam and the Clown Family but I think it would be cool to see this classic comedy get an animated reboot. Like with the Marvel stuff the chances of this getting an animated reboot is pretty slim partly because a live action reboot is currently in development but also because this franchise isn't as popular as it once was so it's not a guaranteed hit.

Breaking Bad

Now I know your all wondering how an animated version of Breaking Bad could work and to that I say look at what I said about Game Of Thrones, Just do this show twenty or so years later or if your really desperate and want to do a different story then why not get working on it right now and pitch it to Sony and maybe get it to air to air on Netflix.
