When a new season of classic Doctor Who is announced to be joining it's ever popular Blu-Ray range it's always a course for celebration. As it means that new fans will get the chance to to discover episodes that they perhaps might have never even heard about with this episode being a very good example of that and so then join me as i review the episode that sees one companion leave the show for good with the episode in question being called simply just "Terminus" enjoy.
The plot of this episode is when something causes the TARDIS to go wrong The Doctor and his companions find themselves on a spaceship they have to prevent the ship from exploding and causing the end of the universe. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty pretty bad with this episodes plot being weak at best so weak infact that it's hard to tell what the actual plot of this episode even was as the plot is that weak in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this episode is Peter Davison as The Doctor , Sarah Sutton as Nyssa and Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka. Also starring in this episode is Mark Strickson as Vislor Turlough , Valentine Dyall as The Black Guardian , Liza Goddard as Kari , Dominic Guard as Olvir , Andrew Burt as Valgard , Tim Munro as Sigurd , Martin Potter as Eirak , Peter Benson as Bor , R.J. Bell as The Garm , Martin Muncaster as The Voice Of The Tannoy and Rachel Weaver as Inga.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. Wit all of this episodes cast turning in some decent performances the issue is tho that the guest cast aren't really given all that much to work with interms of what their characters personalities are and so they can't really match up with the series regular cast performance wise.
To me this is the episode that feels the most like a horror film as it has alot of the elements that are found in horror films.Like for example having deformed people walking around wile our main heroes are hidden underneath is a very common trope as is the spacecraft setting all of which give this episode an Alien type of vibe and that is something that does work really well to this episodes advantage as it gives the episode some much needed atmosphere as it means that there could be a scare coming around the corner at minuet now.
Usually when Doctor Who does an episode where a companion leaves the show that companion is usually replaced the next episode or even in the exact same episode. However this particular era of the show did something different by introducing the next companion in the previous episode and by giving them a whole story arc with this episode being the middle of that arc for the character of Vislor Turlough and this was a really cool idea as it gives the audience the chance to see the character go through some rather radical changes before he becomes fully excepted as the new companion to The Doctor.
With that being said however I don't like the idea of a companion trying to kill of The Doctor as it's something that a companion should never try to do. As to me a companion is someone who the can be a friend to The Doctor when he needs one and someone who can tell The Doctor of when he does something that's close to being a Dalek and while having Vislor Turlough start of as this evil character does give his character somewhere to go interms of character development it also makes him seem like a rather unlikable character as well.
This episode is the one that saw Nyssa leave the TARDIS for good and to put it bluntly I really didn't like her departure. As it's something that's really built up it's just something that happens for no reason and that's not what a companion departure should be like as it should be something that's built up over of the course of either story or a single episode so that way when it does happen it feels like a natural conclusion but here it's something that only gets mentioned near the end of the story and that doesn't do either the show or the character any kind of justice.
Now then this episode has four episodes which means that this episode has / had a combined grand total running time of roughly one and thirty minuets. Which was a bit on the short side for this episode as it doesn't give us time to fully develop either the story or it's characters which ultimately leaves the story leaving a bit flat and the characters feeling rather one dimensional at the best of times which is a shame because the basic idea of this episode is a very solid idea it just needed more episodes to fully do it justice but I will admit that this episode does have some really good pacing to it.
So now then as there was some action in this episode that means that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty not that bad. Especially since classic Doctor Who wasn't really known for having really good action scenes and to see some really good looking action scenes in this episode was truly shocking to see in in this episode in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this was a fairly bad companion departure episode as it doesn't really give any kind of closure to the leaving companion and the story as a whole feels rather under-cooked as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very episode in this very review and as such that means that this very episode earns itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
