Looney Tunes "Devil May Hare" Review

The Looney Tunes characters are some of the most well known characters in the world of animation yet this is something that you really wouldn't know given just how badly they've been treated by there own creators in recent years. Yet this wasn't always the case as there was a time where anything a new Looney Tunes cartoon meant that we were going to be seeing somethin good and that is very much the case with the cartoon that i'm going to be revieing for you all today and so then join me as I review the review the cartoon that introduces us to Taz with the cartoon in question being called simply just "Devil May Hare" enjoy.

The plot of this cartoon is when a hungry Taz escapes and goes looking to eat quite literally anything for lunch its up to ne scared and easily frightened rabbit to put a stop to him before he to becomes lunch. Now then interms of what I personally thought / about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon was in all honesty really good. The plot to this cartoon is one that is quite simple and to be fair that's all it needed to be as alot of the Looney Tunes shorts did have very simple plots to them with alot of them this one included just essentially having a premise and nothing more then that. This is something that does allow for the makers of this cartoon to pack in the cartoon with alot more jokes and not have to spend so little time in explaining the joke which is something that they would have to do if the plot was alot more deep and complex and to it's credit this is where the episode does shine its best with the plot of the cartoon being delightfully simple as we don't need to know why Taz is going after Bugs we just need to know that he's hungry and will and in this case does eat anything that comes before him and that's and that it is great for a cartoon like this one, this isn't to say that all cartoons should have simple plots as something like Mickey Mouse cartoon can get away with having more complex plots but for a Looney Tunes cartoon you do want a plot that is more simple and easy to follow and that's exactly what he plot of this cartoon is in all of the best ways possible with the plot of this cartoon also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this cartoon is Mel Blanc with him providing the voices for all of the cartoons characters something which he did pretty much all of the time. With it being next to impossible to tell that characters like Bugs and Taz for example are being voiced by the same actor as he does go to great lengths into giving these characters distinct enough voices that you can tell just who is talking when you close your eyes and just listen to the cartoon this is of course helped by the fact that Bugs does have one of if not the most famous cartoon voice but even with Taz when we are so used to hearing the character speaking what is essentially gibberish and yet here not only does speak full English but he's also got a more intelligent sounding voice to him as well. Of course the characters voice would change over the years before finally ending up with the more familiar sounding voice for the character but it is interesting to see not only where the characters voice would start but also what the evolution of his voice was like as we know that Bugs's voice in his official cartoon is alot more different then what it is now with him originally sounding like a just as daffy Daffy Duck before slowly morphing into his more familiar sounding voice the ore that the character was refined and the more that various other directors worked on him and it does appear to be the same case with Taz and yet even in this cartoon you can still can here a bit of the more traditional sounding voice for the character as there are times when he's spinning where he does speaking gibberish and yet it doesn't feel out of character for him even when he's speaking in full English and infact you could make the case that having him speak like this when he's the villain of the cartoon is perfect as it does make him sound more threatening of a character whereas with him speaking gibberish you do lose that.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon was in all honesty really good. It's not rally all that surprising that the acting in this cartoon is as good as it is given the fact that we do have perhaps the best voice actor ever doing all of the voices for all of the characters in the cartoon and while yes it would have helped if we did have more actors in this cartoon just to give Mel someone to bounce off of it wasn't something that was needed as you can barely tell that both characters were played by the same man. It does go without saying but the best actor in this cartoon is of course Mel Blanc as he is just so good as both Bugs and Taz in this cartoon and while the voice or Taz would evolve over years it is nice to see there the voice the character started with Mel giving just as much to his performance as Taz as he would do to Bugs with it coming across as him having a deep level of love for all of the characters that he voices not only in general but in this cartoon as a whole as he does go to great lengths into giving all of the cartoons characters there own level of warmth with the same thing even being true for Taz and he is meant to be the villain of the piece this is something that does shine through in his performance with his performance in this cartoon even giving alot of the characters some of their personalities. With the acting that's in this very cartoon really being helped by the fact that this cartoons script is just so good that all this cartoons actor has to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of him naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very cartoon.

Doing the animation for this cartoon is Herman Cohen , Phil DeLara , Charles McKimson and Rod Scribner. Now then interms of what I personally thought / about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon was in all honesty really good. While alot of the classic Looney Tunes cartoons do gave these highly detailed backgrounds that show off the fact that these shorts were made to be seen on the big screen this short goes the opposite way by giving us these highly minimalistic backgrounds and this is something that does work well enough in the cartoons favor. As not all of these Looney Tunes cartoons need to have these highly detailed backgrounds for them to look good does it help yes but it's not something that's needed with the thing that helps to sell you on this cartoons animation being the fact that these backgrounds not only never repeated in the cartoon but they also never got reused and yet they still look really good. Heck the animation on the whole is of a really high quality as you can tell right from the first frame that alot of blood , sweat and tears when into this cartoons animation due to the fact that we do get alot of shots that would have been really hard to pull of in 2D like the fact that we get to see Taz hanging upside down only we are seeing it from the ground up whereas today such a shot would be done in CGI back in the day tho the makers of this cartoon just had to take a chance on it working and thank god it did as that shot does look really good with all of the cartoons animation more then holding up all of these later.

For those of you that perhaps didn't know this cartoon marks the official debut for Taz with him in this cartoon just looking for some lunch. Which in this case does involve eating Bugs Bunny and while the character would get more refined as the years went on here in this early version of the character he is still pretty much as fully formed as he is ever likely to be with the only major difference being that much like Wile E. Coyote did in either his first or one of his first cartoons Taz speaks almost in full sentences with him still maintaining his more animalistic nature where as in later years especially during The Looney Tunes Show he would be played up more as being a wild animal and would barely speak in English. This version of the character even tho it's a rough draft of a character still does work and the fact that even all of these years later there's really only been one major change to his character does show you that the makers of this cartoon really did nail him on his first attempt and the fact that the character was only brought back for more cartoons after alot of fans demanded that the character be brought back does show out that he is one of the most underrated characters in Looney Tunes history. As yeah this character was originally meant to be a one and done character but due to how the fans responded to him as a character Warner Bros had no choice but t bring him back to start in more cartoons with him being a core Looney Tunes character ever since then and to be fair it's not that hard to see why he ended up being as popular as he did as even in this cartoon he is a highly entertaining character who can at times be goofy and be looney and while that might take away from other Looney Tunes villains here it is something that does help him feel more well rounded and while he is going up against the powerhouse that is Bugs Bunny he does come out being just as fun to watch as Bugs himself is.

Whilst there are alot of really good things to be found in this cartoon there some downsides to this cartoon as well like for example the fact that the cartoons plot might be a bit to simple for it's own good as while yes it is good that it did have a simple plot there are times where it is hard to work out just what the main plot of the cartoon is due to how simple the cartoons plot is with the other thing being the fact that despite Taz being the villain of the cartoon you do still end up liking him as a character whereas if the makers of this cartoon wanted t us to truly hate this character then they should have gone as far as they could have done into making Taz be this evil character. Like for example they could have had him come close to eating Bugs a couple of times are actually show Bugs being scared of him both of these are very simple things to do but there also really effective as they get across the fact that Taz is someone that should be feared with this having the added impact of making all the times that Bugs does get his payback on Taz be all the more fun to watch as now we the audience want to see all of these things happen to him and yet as the makers of this cartoon went almost out of there way to not make him as evil as they could have done by making him be this more aloof type of character then alot of the times that Bugs does get back at him whilst they are still funny there not really earned with it feeling like that the cartoon is just going through the motions during those parts of the cartoon. However to be fair tho whilst these shorts were made more with families in mind and not just kids it does somewhat make sense that they wouldn't make Taz out to be this truly evil character as they are trying to appease the whole family but it still would have been nice to see what a fully evil Taz would have looked like as there is the potential there for him to be this really evil but still looney character.

Just to talk about Bugs for a second he is just as fun to watch in this cartoon as he is in alot of his other cartoons. This is something that does make sense as the character had been around for alot longer then Taz at that point in time and therefor the makers of this cartoon would have gotten his personality down perfectly with this being something that would have helped to make it easier to come up with stories for him and to be pairing this new character with Bugs Bunny is something that does make sense as Bugs was and still is the bigger star of the two and therefor putting him in a Bugs Bunny cartoon is guaranteed to give the cartoon alot more eyes on it just due to the fact that Bugs was in alot more cartoons. However this is something that could be seen as being a bad thing as we all know that Bugs is never going to loose at the end of the cartoon outside of a few Elmer Fudd cartoons and therefor there's not really alot of tension in the cartoon with the tension instead coming from the fact that we are now left trying to work out how Bugs will get himself out of this one now whereas if Taz was paired up with someone like Daffy or Porky who yes are still very well known characters in there own right you would then have that tension right away as both of those characters very rarely if ever "won" there cartoons and therefor we would be more tense when we see Taz chasing after either of them, yet at the same time tho Bugs and Taz do make for a good combo with it making you wonder why the makers of this cartoon didn't pair these two up more often as you could have gotten alot of laughs out of Bugs using his street smarts to outwit the hungry nature of Taz or heck when they pair Taz up with Bugs they could have given him a slightly different personality like what they did with Daffy when he teamed up with Bugs as Taz and Bugs do have the potential to be a really funny combo and they could have been exactly that if they were paired up together more often.

Now then this cartoon has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly six minuets and fifty five seconds. With this pretty much being the exact grand total running time for alot of the Looney Tunes cartoons and to be fair to this cartoon whilst it really doesn't need to be that long as you very easily could have told this cartoons plot in well under five minuets it does have to fully set up a new character and get across what he is like and still a good story and there is a good chance that the cartoon wouldn't have been able to do that if it was under five minuets with the cartoon even having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount on running time in the first place. While this cartoon doesn't really use it's running time all that wisely as the cartoon doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot this is something that really isn't a bad thing in this case as given the fact that the Looney Tunes cartoons always more gag driven then they are plot driven it dos make sense that the plot wouldn't be as well developed as that would mean taking up screen time away from the cartoons jokes and when the plot of the cartoon is as simple as it is then this cartoons plot really didn't need to be as well developed and while yes it would have been nice if the plot of this cartoon was alot more well developed it wasn't something that the makers of this cartoon needed to do as it would be the jokes that determined if this cartoon is good or not. The same thing is also true for the cartoons lack of character development with the added thing in this case being the fact that you could make the argument that Bugs has all of his other characters to get some character development and while it would have been nice if Taz did get some character development in this cartoon as there was guarantee that he would be getting more cartoons in the future it wasn't something that was needed as he is meant to be the villain of the piece but I really will admit that this cartoon really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean tat I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very cartoon was in all honesty really good. This cartoon does have alot of good jokes in it all of which do feel true to who both Taz and Bugs are as characters be it from Taz cutting down mountains whilst chasing Bugs to Bugs burying Taz in the ground in an early attempt to get away from him bottom line being here is that there are alot of good jokes in this cartoon with it being made clear that the makers of this cartoon did put alot of thought and effort into this cartoons jokes. With the best joke in this cartoon being a tie between when Bugs gets Taz to swallow an inflatable raft and then pulling string this making Taz himself turn into a raft is a funny visual and when Bugs is on the phone ordering an advertisement for a female Taz to come and marry Taz only for him to get cut off by the operator when Bugs turns and talks to the audience which again is a funny joke with the thing that makes the raft Taz joke even more funny being the animation as we get to see him turn into a Taz shaped raft which was something that the makers of this cartoon didn't have to do and the thing that makes the joke about Bugs being cut of by the phone operator work as well as it does being the fact that it is a slightly clever joke as it is something that you wouldn't expect to find in a Looney Tunes cartoon and yet that is why both of these jokes work so well as there jokes that you don't see coming with them being able to work so well because of it with the rest of the cartoons jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall this was a solid cartoon as it does show you just how good that the Looney Tunes could be when they have a good director making there cartoons and while Warner Bros might be content with destroying there own legacy this is cartoon is a good reminder of why these characters are so well beloved in the first place in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very cartoon in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very cartoon really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very revie well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Looney Tunes Wiki . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get the images from this very cartoon that I used in this very post being the really great Google Images really simply just due to the fact that really alot of if not really all of the images that are all really from this very cartoon with alot of them really being really better quality then what you'd really think of and all of the images are really of course up and really on Google Images really are also really all fairly high in quality and as well as them all being really fairly freaking high in definition and there's really only one way to end this review T-T-T-T-THAT'S ALL FOLKS.
