Doctor Who: The Snowmen A Short Review

When you think of Christmas specials there was one TV show that you could always count on to air episodes yearly. With that show being none other then Doctor Who and yet very rarely did any of its specials impact the plot of the then current series and yet that's the one thing that this episode does and so join me as I review the episode that brings back a classic Doctor Who villain with the episode in question being called simply just "The Snowmen" enjoy.

The plot of this episode is when Snowmen start popping up all over the place its up to a barmaid and governess to try and get The Doctor out of his depression and convince him to save the world again. Plot wise this episodes plot was really good as it not only gave us the typical Doctor Who Christmas affair but it also took certain plot elements in a much more darker area then what other Doctor Who Christmas episodes have dared to do and while the darker elements of this episodes plot don't really have that much if an effect on this episodes plot they do add some to the overall mystery of this current series with the plot of this episode also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this episode is Matt Smith as The Doctor and Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara Oswin Oswald. Also starring in this episode is Richard E. Grant as Dr Simeon , Dan Starkey as Strax, Catrin Stewart as Jenny Flint , Neve McIntosh as Madame Vastra , Tom Ward as Captain Latimer , Liz White as Alice , Joseph Darcey-Alden as Digby , Ellie Darcey-Alden as Francesca , Juliet Cadzow as The voice of the ice governess and Sir Ian McKellen as the voice of The Great Intelligence.

From an acting point of view this episode is really good. As the acting that's in this very episode us really good with all of the actors that you expect a great performance from giving us exactly that but while the acting in this episode is of a really high quality there are some bad performances to be found in this very episode with the likes of Joseph Darcey-Alden and Ellie Darcey-Alden turning in some really bland performances as the kids that Clara is put in charge of as they just turn in sone bland and wooden performances which would be OK if this was the bogstandard Doctor Who Christmas episode but its not as it forms apart of the series main narrative and as such the acting from all involved including the kids really should have been really top notch with the acting that's in this very episode really being helped by the fact that this episodes script is just so good that all this episodes actors really have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance really will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very episode.

Doing the CGI for this episode is The Mill and Real SFX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good as the episode does make great use of its CGI with it only being used when they really need to like to create the mouths on the Snowmen or to create the ice governess herself both of which are things that really couldn't have been practically and they therefore had to do them in CGI and to the episodes credit they both look really good even for not only the small budget that this has always had but also the rime in which this episode was both made and aired in as well.

This is the episode that introduces us to another version of Clara in this case its Clara Oswin Oswald. With this version perhaps being the best version of the Clara character as she's spunky and funny and has alot if charm to her and while the version of Clara that we do end up with is a good character it took time for her character to be a decent character where as with this version of the character she's really likable from the second that she appears on screen and that is something that makes her ultimate death all the more tragic as not has The Doctor himself come to accept her as a companion but us the audience had come to like her as well and want to see more adventures with this version of the Clara character.

As was stated at the start of this very review this episode does bring back a classic Doctor Who villain which in this case is The Great Intelligence. Which was a really obscure villain to bring back but what they do in this episode with the character does make sense as while they keep him as a disembodied voice they have this episode serve as a prequel to The Web Of Fear by revealling that it was The Doctor that gave it the idea of attacking the London Underground which is a good idea and while the character isn't used in a great way as he plays second fiddle to the Dr Simeon character given the back story for The Great Intelligence tho that is something that does make at least. some sense but it is something that could have been done alot better as could have the fact that The Doctor is suffering from depression something that is very quickly forgotten about when it would have made from a great ark for the character to go through over the course of this episode.

Now then this episode has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly fifty nine minuets and forty three seconds. Which is a really good running time for this special to have as this episode really does have the amount of plot to really cover that large amount of running time and by giving this episode close to a one hour running time something is pretty much the norm now it does also mean that the plot of the episode can be paced out alot better then what it normally would have been if this had the series bogstandard running time of forty five minuets as that would mean that alot of the character and plot development would be lost in order to meet that runningvtime but I really will admit that this episode really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this an action show that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty not that bad as while we do really only get the action scene in the end of the episode it's really the only one that we need as this is an episode that really doesn't require an action scene every few minuets as the plot and the characters are string enough that when we do get to the episodes action scene you don't mind that it's the only one in the episode as the plot and the characters really are just that strong in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall while there are better Matt Smith era Doctor Who Christmas episodes out there this one really isn't all that bad and is a really solid episode to watch in its own right as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very episode in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very episode really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out 10 from me.

Now then interms of where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Doctor Who fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get the images from this very episode that I used in this very review being the really great Google Images really simply just due to the fact that really alot of if not really all of the images that are all really from this very episode with alot of them being better quality then what you'd really think of and all of the images are really of course up and really on Google Images are also really all fairly high in quality and as well as them all being really fairly freaking high in definition.
