New Doctor Who: Rose Review

Doctor Who fans if you've been following my reviews of the show for a long time then you'll know that I only review New Doctor Who whenever there's a new episode. Well I thought i'd put a stop to that by taking a look back at an episode from the very first series well it is the first series of the 2005 reboot and well what better place to start then right at the beginning and so here is my review of Rose enjoy.

The plot of the episode is teenager Rose Tyler works at a shop in London and one night before the shop closes she discovers The Autons and now she and a mysterious man known only as The Doctor have to stop them from taking over the world. In terms of plot this episode is pretty light on it since it's the basic introduction to a new companion episode and it also serves as the introduction to a new Doctor but when all is said and done the story is honestly pretty fun to see play out.

As The Doctor we have Christopher Eccleston who unlike all of his previous incarnations hasn't yet shared the screen with any of the previous Doctors. As Rose we have singer Billie Piper and I have to say for someone who at the time hadn't done much acting she is pretty good in this episode Chris kills it as well as The Doctor and to me it's very clear that both he and Billie have great chemistry because I honestly bought them as friends.

This episode also introduced us to Camille Coduri as Jackie Tyler and Noel Clarke as Mickey Smith both of whom don't really get that much screen time in this episode or at least enough for me to form an opinion on them but they are acted really well. In terms of guest starts there's only one and that's Mark Benton as Clive and he's just Mark Benton so if you love him in anything else then your going to love him here.

Now i'm not going to make a comment on the character of Rose just yet because while I did grow up with her as the companion I want to try and rediscover her if that makes sense. That being said i always find it very interesting going back to the first episode of a series that I love because it's always weird knowing where the characters end up and seeing them start on that journey and the same thing is true here because I watched all of these characters for quite a few years and I got to see them grow and so to see them looking so young is just strange to me.

Now i've already said that I grew up watching Billie as Rose but Chris was also my first Doctor infact I vaguely remember seeing adverts for this episode in various magazines. I also remember being super excited to see this episode because to me this was a new show and so when the day of reckoning came I was out my Nana's house with I think my brother and father there might have been a few others there as well and I made all us sit there for forty five minuets just to watch this one episode and I was hooked on the show from this episode so to see I have personal history with this episode would be an understatement.

I actually forgot how action orientated this version of The Doctor is from his first scene he's always involved with some sort of action scene or chase scene. Which is something that I think honestly suits this version of the doctor since he's just coming from being in the Time War so it makes sense that he'd be running everywhere because for years that's what he's had to do just to survive and plus it makes the first episode really exciting.

I actually love how they made The Doctor more mysterious in this episode they kind of build up this whole mystery over who he is and I loved that because it's something that we dont get to see that often. It's also something that would make sense given that this is the 21st century so there would be websites dedicated to this mysterious stranger appearing in and out time and it's something that I wish further series would develop more.

This was also the first series to have the CGI done by The Mill but further research tells me that this wasn't there first Doctor Who adventure as they previously did The Curse Of The Fetal Death. I want it known that I love The Mills work but there effects in this episode haven't really aged well at all in fact they look pretty bad but given that CGI was pretty new to the show and this was mid 2000's CGI it's understandable that it wouldn't hold up that well.

This episode helped make composer Murray Gold famous since he also did the score to the UK version of Shameless which was airing at the same time. It goes without saying that the music in this episode is great it's no wonder that he would go onto to compose the music all the way up until series 10 because every piece of music he does is truly great and is worth listening to , I'll talk about his version of the theme song in a minute because that's something that should be talked about separately.

There is a fair amount of action in this episode and all of it is in my opinion character driven which is the best kind of action for me because then it's the characters that dictate the action and not the story. Also adding to the action is the fact that it also adds to the drama and threat of that episode which is something that I don't really see that often in either films or TV so I was shocked to see it in here and for me the best part of the action is seeing Rose save the doctor just due to the fact we don't see that happen at all.

One of the criticisms that this episode got when it originally aired was for it's use of humour and in some ways I do kind of see why. Since on the one hand the humour does kind of undercut the tension especially in The Doctors intro but at the same time humour is subjective and just because someone doesn't find something funny doesn't mean that you won't find that same something funny but they could have done a better job of putting the humour in a more natural place and not somewhere where it undercuts the tension.

Now we have to talk about the theme song done by Murray Gold because it is an iconic part of the show like how the TARDIS and other iconography. To me honest I find this version of the theme song to be kind of boring there's just nothing in this version of the theme song that really makes it stand out to me which is a shame because like I said theme song is iconic and so it's sad to see a version of it which isn't that good.

Like alot of the reviews I do for this show I actually own this on DVD I have the first series on DVD which was the one where they made the box set as big as the TARDIS itself. It's that big it even took me a few minuets to put it back with the rest of my DVD's because it's so big and where I keep it is so small and I can't put it anywhere else because there's no room in my room for it but this is the struggle that we Doctor Who fans have to got through.

Overall this is a really good introductory episode and if there are any people out there who want to get into the show i'd recommend starting of with this one since it does ease you into the lore but that said it is very light on plot and character and so it gets a 7.5 out of 10 from me.

Ranking All Of The Doctors That i've Seen From Worst To Best

Doctor Who fans since i've grown quite attached to talking to you recently I thought i'd put together a little post i've been thinking about doing. As the title would suggest im going to rank my favourite Doctors from worst to best however I am going to lay down some ground rules first I have to have seen them either in a few episodes or in a movie and second they can only appear on this list if there run with the character is complete so that means no thirteenth doctor and i'm only counting Doctors canon to the show so there's no Peter Cushing Doctor.

Seventh Doctor (Sylvester Mccoy)

I;m not going to lie i've not really seen enough of this version of the character to really dive into his character. However since he does appear in the TV movie I can kind of say that I don't really like this version again just based of the movie he seems like he doesn't fit in with Doctor Who but rather some other show and i'm not sure why that's the case he's acted brilliantly all of them are but I wish that this version just acted more like The Doctor.

Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston)

This version of The doctor is only here because I feel that Chris left just as he was getting really interesting. Which to me does hurt the character because now we are left with the question of what might have been they start him of on this great character arc of learning to cope with the death of his people and even tho they do finish it with the Eleventh Doctor it still would have been cool to see it play out with Christopher Eccleston's Doctor.

Eighth Doctor (Paul Mcgann)

As with the Ninth Doctor we didn't really get alot of time to really know this character well at least in terms of TV time anyways. Since this doctor did have a life in audio , comic book and book form however i've not seen , read or heard all of those and so I can only judge him of the TV movie and the short clip and based of those alone he does seem like he would have made a cool Doctor if he was given a full series to really prove himself.

Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison)

I've only seen two adventures with this Doctor in my life and I have to say that based of those adventures alone he does seem like a really fun version of the character. To me he's like a victorian gentlemen in that he likes all things British and is a fan of Cricket but that's just my opinion I don't know what this character is like when ti comes to the more goofy parts of the show but when he's serious I really buy that this doctor can be a threat.

Tenth Doctor (David Tennant)

I can see alot of you sharpening your pitchforks right now but I do have a reason for him not being my favourite. Which is I personally found him to be far to dramatic which is fine since Doctor Who is a drama however it's also a show that has alot of comedy and while his doctor is indeed pretty good at the comedy but at the same time it could be weird seeing him do a dramatic scene and then go and do a joke in the very next scene but that said when it comes to great speeches and making us believe in this world that is when this doctor shines for me.

Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith)

To me Matt Smith is a better version of The Doctor then David Tennent because his version of the doctor is more alien. Which to me is a great thing because the doctor is alien so it would make sense that the actor would play him as such. Now I won't lie this version of The Doctor can get tiresome since he can be more comedic when he really should be dramatic but I still have fun seeing his episodes.

Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi)

This is the most recent New Who Doctor and I have to admit that unlike alot of fans when Peter was first announced I was excited because Peter is such a good actor and I wasn't disappointed about. Since Peter is honestly a great actor but I will admit that his doctor is more let down by the scripts but that's it and when it comes to giving huge powerful speeches he really does knock it out of the park hell his speech on war is so spine tingling I watch it all the time.

Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker)

Now I have seen at least one adventure with this Doctor so I can include him on this post and I have to say that based of what i've seen he does seem to be a rather strange version of the doctor. Saying that he's a strange version of the character is perhaps the best thing that I can say about him because honestly it suits his take on the character really well because this version of the character is indeed strange in the best kind of way.

First Doctor (William Hartnell)

Now I couldn't do this list and not talk about the first doctor somehow it would just feel wrong and given that there are two more Doctors yet to name he's not my favourite Doctor. Don't get wrong I do indeed like him since he does feel like a grandfatherly figure which is what the makers of the show were going for but it doesn't really work when it comes to the shows more comedic scenes but given that he was the first doctor we can kind of forgive him for not being perfect.

Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton)

Now the only adventures i've seen from this doctor are mostly the animated classic reconstructions so I do have a fair idea of what his doctor is like. This doctor had a lot of live up to since no one in 1966 had even heard of regeneration and in my opinion they did a good job of handling this change since this version of the character is alot more goofy and yet when he needs to he can quite stern and smart.

Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee)

I will always say that the third doctor is my all time favourite Doctor not only is he played by an actor who is in my opinion perfect for the role. Jon Pertwee was an actor known for his more comedic roles and while he did do more dramatic roles he wasn't really known for them and so to see him act well in the role is a truly great thing to see and what makes his doctor stand out from the early doctors is that he's more willing to get into fights even if it is as a last resort.

Some Cartoon Opinions Of Mine

Opinions everyone has them and chances are my opinions aren't going to agree with yours and so I thought that instead of doing the very popular Unpopular opinions post. I thought that i'd do something a tad bit different and that's tell you some of the opinions that I have about various cartoons and to make things more different i'm not just limiting myself to cartoons shows either since i'll also be talking some opinions I have about animated movies.

Teen Titans Go! Is Actually Pretty Good

Yeah you guys read that right and it's true this show is in my opinion actually pretty good it can be at times be pretty funny with the plots well told. That said i'm not going to lie and say that it's a perfect show because that would be a dumb thing to say since for every funny joke that's in the show there will be a joke that's painfully unfunny but those are few and far between in my opinion and the show turned out a very entertaining movie with Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.

Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm Is The Best Batman Movie Ever Made

Now I know that there's going to be alot of Christopher Nolan fans getting ready to show alot of hate while declaring that The Dark Knight is the best film ever made in the history of ever. Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm is easily the best Batman movie ever made and yes i'm including all of the live action films when I say that and i'm saying that because this film is the only film that portrays Batman closest to his comic book counterpart think about it Batman is said to be the world's greatest detective and yet none of the movies have shown him trying to solve a crime well this film did and on top of that the mystery is really good.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated Is Overrated

Look i'm not going to lie Mystery Incorporated is a solid show but it's not as good as people say that it is. I honestly feel that the show is overrated as hell Scooby-Doo was a show that was built on comedy it was never built on drama and long running storylines so why did this show think that it was good to downplay the comedy that the franchise was famous for and replace it with drama that no one was asking for yes there are times where the drama does work but we don't need it in every single episode.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! Is Better The Mystery Incorporated

Yes I know that this is going to make alot of people angry but I honestly feel that Be Cool Scooby-Doo is better then Mystery Incorporated. I'm not saying that it's better in every aspect but Be Cool knew that Scooby-Doo is a comedy and so that's where the focus is as well telling some really good mysteries and this show did something that Mystery Incorporated didn't do and that's give Daphne a personality gone was the personality less character of old and in her place was someone who actually a personality.

Infinity Train Is The Best Show Currently Airing On Cartoon Network

I din't say these were unpopular opinions but it's true if you look at all the shows that Cartoon Network is currently airing you have to admit that Infinity Train is the best one. I'm not just saying that as a fan i'm saying it as a fan of well written shows and that's what this show is it's well written in every single way the show knows when to mix in comedy and when it has to be dramatic and that's not something that alot of shows airing on the network do these days.

The Toy Story Franchise Is The Best Animated Franchise Out There

I know that there alot of people who love the Dragons franchise and while those are indeed decent films. They have nothing on the Toy Story films which barring the fourth film they are all perfect films all of the films are capable of getting you to cry be it due to a characters heartbreaking backstory , or due to a character that we've grown up with giving up his own toys or even due to two lovers meeting up again and that's something that the Dragons films just don't do.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Is Actually Good

I know that alot of people don't like various things about this show and while everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have to say that in my opinion the show is actually really good it has great animation and story telling and while I won't deney that there are times that the show does lean of gender politics you cannot deny the fact that the show is indeed a good show and I hope that Netflix keep it on and give us more of a warning when new episodes are dropping.

Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!! Review

Animation fans I never watched Rocko's Modern Life growing it was on just before my time but i'll admit to being caught up in the hype for the special. The history behind this special is quite interesting because for years at a time no one knew when the special was coming out and first it was going to air on Nickelodeon but then for some strange reason they sold the special to Netflix who have just released the special and so here is my review of Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling.

The plot of the special is twenty years ago Rocko and his friends Heffer Wolfe and Filburt were somehow launched into space and now two decades later they found a way back home and must adjust to modern life. I'll admit there's a bit more going on in terms of plot but i'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible for now but the story it self was really simple and very easy to follow but I feel that it would have been better swerved with a longer run time.

Every actor is returning from the show and so starring in the special is Carlos Alazraqui as Rocko, Spunky, Leon Chameleon, Gordon, Mitch, Bun Master and Squirmy the Ringworm , Tom Kenny as Heffer Wolfe and Chuck Chameleon , Charlie Adler as Ed & Bev Bighead, Mr. Dupette, Grandpa Wolfe and Mr. & Mrs. Fathead , co-writer Mr. Lawrence as Filburt , Jill Talley as Nosey and Rabbit Mama and creator / co-writer / co-director Joe Murray.

I will say that there's a name that i've left of this list on purpose and that's because I want to talk about their character separately. In terms of what I thought of the acting it's wasn't that bad like I said I didn't grow up with the show so I don't have the same attachment to these actors that other people might have but the acting in the special is honestly pretty good and i'm sure that people who grew up with the show will be glad to these voices again.

The animation for the special was done by Yeson Entertainment, Inc. and what's interesting is that this was animated the only fashioned way and not done on tablets like most shows are now. The animation was honestly a lot better then what i was expecting it to be I was honestly expecting it to look cheap but no it looks like some effort actually went into it and it really does show at least in my opinion.

SPOILERS Start NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The one thing that I left of the cast list was who Joe was playing and that is Rachel Bighead which might not seem as spoiler but Rachel was formerly known as Ralph. Yes guys you read that right there's a transgender character in this and not only that there's a storyline involving Mr. Big Head coming to terms coming to terms with the fact that his son is now his daughter and i;m honestly ok with this storyline because unlike most shows that hit you over the head with there acceptance message here it's done just right in my opinion.

In terms of what I thought about the character of Rachel to me she seemed pretty bland like I get that she most likely had a lot of development in the show and that's understandable but here in this special it comes across as she has no personality. Which in terms of representing transgender people isn't a good things since their writing her as a trans person first and a character second when it should be the other way around.

What really does damage this special at least in my opinion is the fact that it's only forty five minuets long. To me given that there's enough plot in here to make it at least an hour and a half long so by making it forty five minuets long it means that alot of scenes and plots that would have been better served with a longer running time but as it is there are alot of scenes that feel rushed and it does hurt the film.

Now i'll admit that as someone who wasn't a fan of the show since I didn't watch the show growing up I did find alot of the jokes to be really freaking funny. That being said tho in my opinion the best jokes in the film were all mostly seen in the first clip that was released in 2018 but there was one that totally caught me of guard and that's the scene were they straight up kill of an old lady even tho they don't really show her dieing given that they drop a phone into some water which she's in it's pretty obvious that she's dead.

SPOILERS End Here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall this wasn't a bad special and the way it ends does indeed leave it open to further episodes but that being said I can see a fan enjoying this more then someone who wasn't a fan but that being said the special gets a 7 out of 10 from me.
