Paddington 1976 TV Series "Paddington Makes A Clean Sweep" Review

Paddington is a character that really doesn't need an introduction as the character has been entertaining people for literally generations. Be it threw the books or the more recent live action films this bear has captured the hearts and souls of millions with his first TV series perhaps being the more loved TV series that the character has been in and it's another episode of that show that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so then join me as I review the episode that is quite literally a nothing episode with the episode in question being called simply just "Paddington Makes A Clean Sweep" enjoy.

The plot of this episode is when Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Bird leave Paddington at home with a chimney sweeping kit he takes it upon himself to clean the Browns chimney for them. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty OK at best. To put it simply this episode has a complete nothing of a plot as the plot just boils down to Paddington wants to do something and then he does it and that's it which for an episode of this show isn't that good as this shows plots did typically show Paddington getting into trouble before doing what he wanted to do in the first place. Yet here as there is so little build up and so little plot to the episode the episodes plot does come across as being a nothing episode with it feeling like that the plot was deemed to be secondary to whatever Paddington was doing at the time and while yes of course in any TV show you are going to get episodes that do have more weaker plots here as the rest of these first series plots are so strong in there own right it does make this episode stand out all the more due to the fact that the plot itself does feel a bit on the weaker side of things and heck one could argue that this is a plot that would have been better served if it was mixed in with a plot with another episode heck this episodes plot would have been better if it was apart of the plot of the episode "Something Nasty In The Kitchen" as there you have the inbuilt reason as to why Mrs and Mr. Brown can't help Paddington out and he would want to help out by helping the cleaning the house as well as look after them whereas here the plot just felt like that it was lacking that extra special something with the plot of this episode also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this episode is Sir Michael Hordern with him being just as good as you think that he would be in this episode. As he does have the right voice to help to bring Paddington and the other characters to life and heck there are only four characters in this episode and he does a good job of making the male characters those being Paddington and the Chimney Sweeper sound distinctive enough as he gives the chimney sweeper more of an east end accent he same thing cannot be said for the female characters tho those of course being Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Bird as the two of them do sound very similar with none of them not even being given that much of an accent to help to make them sound differently from each other. Yet with Paddington and the chimney sweeper if you closed your eyes and just listened to the audio you'd be able to tell just who is who as the two as those voices sound very differently from each other this was also the same issue that Sir Ringo Starr had when he was doing the first series of Thomas & Friends as he made alot of the character sound similar and while it's not as bad in this episode due to the fact that it is only localized to those two characters it is something that should have been fixed but this review is being written with the added benefit of hindsight therefor there is a chance that back in 1976 people might have been able to tell he voices of Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Bird apart and while it's not really an issue with the episode as a whole as the characters only appear at the start and end of the episode and that's really it it is something that could have been fixed as it would given Sir Michael Hordern the chance to show off just what kind of voices that he could do as he is good as those characters it's just the voices that he uses for them that needed to be worked on not the performance for them.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. With it being obvious as to why Sir Michael Hordern was chosen to be the voices of these characters as he is so good in this episode due to the fact that he does have a rather calming voice to him that does help to make the events seen in not only this episode but in other episodes seem all the more charming with his performance in this episode in particular being a really good example of this as while Paddington is of course causing trouble Sir Michael Hordern gives us a performance makes Paddington seem innocent and more polite. With the best actor in this episode of being Sir Michael Hordern as the man is just so good in not only this show but in this episode as well as you can tell that he is treating this as if it where a film made for adults or something that adults would enjoy as he's not being over the top and giving a performance that talks down to kids rather he is giving us a performance that is worthy of all of these characters as he does put in alot of thought and effort into his performance and it is something that does show as he very easily could have treated not only this episode but the show as a whole as something that's beneath him as it's for kid and he was a film actor but he didn't and that is something that does need to be recognised as he is just so good in this episode with his natural charm really shining through in this performance in this episode. With the acting that's in this very episode really being helped by the fact that this episodes script is just so good that all this episodes actor really has to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance really will come out of him naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acing that's in this very episode. 

Doing the animation for this episode is the legends and the greats that really are currently over at FilmFair. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. The fact that we have some really good animation in this episode is something that really isn't all that surprising as this show does have some really high quality animation in all of it's episodes with this episode of course being of no exception to this rule as you can see right away that the makers of this episode have given this episodes animation alot of thought and effort. With there being alot of stopmotion sequences in this episode that would have been very time consuming to pull off like for example Paddington eating his breakfast which yes is a simple shot to do but it's also one that would have taken all day to film and it looks really good as a result of it or even Paddington struggling to pull the top of the Brown's chimney of his head which again does sound like a really simple shot but given the fact that it's essentially a stop motion show it is something that would have taken alot of time to film, where the episodes animation quality does somewhat dip is in the 2D animation as the characters that are 2D animated don't really appear all that much in the episode and when they do appear there movements do look a little bit stilted which is fair enough as they are not the main characters of the episode Paddington is but it still wo8ld have been nice if there animation was given as much care and attention as the animation for Paddington quite clearly was.

This episode is the very definition of a nothing episode as nothing all that much actually happens in the episode. This is something that does make the episode out to quite forgettable as it the episode doesn't really have all that much going on it which is something that would have been fine if the plot of this episode was part of the plot of another episode as then you could kind of forgive one portion of an episode for not being that good however tho this is meant to be the whole episode and the episode might as well have ended when Paddington did clean out the Browns chimney as that was what he wanted to do for them in the first place and yet the episode keeps on going for no reason when then the main plot of the episode has good as well finished. Look far enough this is something that might also be true for the book that this episode is adapted from called "Paddington Marches On" but in that book it would have had several other stories in i and therefor having one bad or slightly bad story in a book that might have several good stories isn't all that bad but as this is the meant to be the main episode there really should have been more thought out into the episode and not just make it an episode where Paddington reaches his gal within the first few minuets of the episode as all this ends up doing is making the rest of the episode feel pointless, fair enough you have to to have Paddington messing up somehow and that's fair and to be fair to this episode this episode does give an understandable reason for him to mess up however the episode should have been building up to him messing up like for example what if in the episode Paddington tries and fails to put the kit together with all of his attempts to mend the situation just making worst only or when he does finally get the kit together that's when Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Bird come back from the shops and see the mess that he's made and make him clean it up that would make alot of sense as your building up to him messing up something which you know full well that he is going to do in someway shape or form.

The idea for the episode is a very good idea as it does allow for Paddington to get into trouble in a new way. However tho the episode misses a trick as instead of it being revealed that Paddington just got his head stuck in the chimney why not have it be that he got stuck in the fire place and have him be covered head to toe in soot if your going to hint that he might have fallen into the fireplace then why not all the way with it and make that the big ending moment and have it be the main big thing that Paddington screwed up as afterall he was just trying to help the Browns out and yet for one reason or another the makers of this episode not only went the other way but they also didn't show the device getting more lodged in the first fire place after Paddington went up on the roof top to get it. It might sound like that I really hate this episode but I really don't it's just that when you compare this episode to he other episodes of this first series all of which knock it out of the park every single time then this episode does come up as being a bit short as while the idea for the episode is a good one where it fails is in the execution of the idea as having Paddington trying to clean the Browns chimney is one that does allow for plenty of comedy to be had even of it's just Paddington messing up the house that is something that would still work for this episode as it is something that he character would indeed do and we know from the first Paddington film he has done that and it therefor wouldn't be out of character for hm to do something like that in this episode, whilst this is very much a nothing episode it could be argued that this is part of the episodes charm as it does show the every day life of this family and while it does add some charm to the episode it is also something that really wasn't needed for the episode as all it ends up doing is making this episode a pointless one to watch in the grand scheme of things. 

To say something nice about the episode it's simple plot and set does allow for a character like Paddington to be his usual cute and charming self. With him just trying to do the best that he can do in a situation that he know nothing about for people that he clearly cares deeply for this is one of the episodes biggest strengths as part of the charm of the Paddington franchise is just seeing this lovable bear just trying to do the best that he can do and seeing how he messes everything up with this being something that the episode does get right as for everything that Paddington does do right in this episode something happens that causes him to do something wrong and seeing how he does try to fix things before its to late does show us the audience why Paddington is still as beloved today as was back in previous decades. To compare this episode to another show that had a nothing episode in this case the Worzel Gummidge episode "A Little Learning" which also had the main character achieve there goal before the end of the episode both of the episodes have plots that allow for the main character to not only to get into trouble in a believable way for those characters but it also allows them to be there usual charming selves which in both cases is more then enough to make both of these episodes worth watching as even tho this episode isn't that good we are still getting lots of scenes with Paddington just being cute and trying to fix things before they get out of hand and in Worzel Gummidge we have the main character doing everything that he can to not cause that much trouble all while doing exactly that this is something that does allow for the characters of both episodes to be there more charming selves as it will always be fun seeing Paddington get things wrong and try to put them right much like how it will always be fun seeing Worzel trying and failing to avoid getting into trouble.

Now then this episode has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly five minuets and ten seconds. Which is pretty much the bogstandard running time for this show and to be fair to this episode given it's incredibly thin premise it rally didn't need to be all that much longer as if the episode was longer then it would have been stretching what was a thin premise even thinner which would have resulted in there being alot of filler scenes in there just to pad out the episode when if truth be told this is the kind of the episode where the shorter the running time is the better the episode would end up being as us the audience wouldn't be forced to focus on it's issues all that long with the episode having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. However this this episode really doesn't use its running tome all that wisely as the episode really doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot which fair enough is something that could also be said for alot of the shows other episodes as well but given the fact that this episodes plot was already really thin it is something that could have used something quite literally anything that would give the episodes plot some kind of plot development as we don't even get to find out where Mr , Jonathon and Judy Brown are in the episode and nor do we find out why they've chose to have there chimney cleaned in the first place with the makers of this episode being more focused on showing us scenes with Paddington putting together and taking apart the brush to clean the chimney then they are in giving the episodes plot development. This is something that does also effect the episodes character development which again to be fair to this episode is something that you do just have to expect with a show like this as it is an episodic show and therefor the characters aren't going to be getting characters development but it still would have been nice if Paddington himself got to have some character development with the makers of this episode being more focused of showing us Paddington cleaning a chimney then they were in giving its characters any form of characters development but i really will admit that this episode really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally tought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. The comedy in this episode was one of the episodes strongest points as it is really good as while it is just yes Paddington finding a new way to mess things up here tho in this episode it wasn't his fault as he didn't that the end of the stick was prone to coming detached at the top of a chimney and yet he still went to try and fix it with this being something that does speak to how Paddington is as he is just trying to do his best and yet his best always ends up with him messing something up in cute and funny ways. With the best joke in the episode being when its discovered that when trying to dislodge the end of the stick himself Paddington actually got his own head stuck in the Browns chimney with him being unable to remove it as it's quite hard to do with paws with him even being unable to raise his hate to the chimney sweeper because of it which is just such a cute gag to end the episode as that is something that Paddington would do and those are things that he would say and they both work well with the thing that makes them work as well as they do oddly enough being the fact that the episode does have this simple premise with everything being set up quite early one which does allow for the episode to just be funny with the episodes ending joke being a very good example of this and it is something that might well have been effected if the episode did have a more stronger plot to it with the rest of the episodes jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall whilst this episode might very well be the weakest episode in this show it is still a really charming episode its own right despite its flaws with the episode itself also allowing the characters to be there usual charming and funny selves and while yes the episode could have been alot better if it was more better then the episode would lose alot of the charm that it presently has in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very episode in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very episode really does earn itself a grand old score f exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.

Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories: Really Helpful Engines Review

Thomas The Tank Engine is finally back as years after the dreadful All Engines Go reboot fans got a glimmer of hope with the wonderful Wonder Of Sodor game. There is alot more hope to be had as there is a new Thomas special out and what's better is the fact that it was released onto Youtube and is the first special of a new Thomas series and so then join me as I review the special that sees the Thomas franchise come back in a big way with the special in question being called simply just "Really Helpful Engines" enjoy.

The plot of this special is Thomas wants to do a really big and important job for Sir Topham Hatt and goa to ask Gordon for advice. Now then interms of what I personally thought / about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special was in all honesty not that bad. With the specials plot not really being one of the franchises better plots however tho in saying this this special plot is easily better then any of the plots in All Engines Go as it actually feels true to Thomas and isn't just there to talk down to kids and be a generic cartoon plot as there is some feel of thought put into this specials plot. However tho it is hard to call this specials plot good as all it is is an excuse t introduce the new show and that's fine but there still needs to be something special about the plot to make it feel worthy of being the plot of a special episode of the show rather this plot feels like it could have been the plot of an episode of the show as it serves the same basic function as a pilot episode and that's really it and while yes the plots in All Engines Go weren't that good the plots for there specials knew that they had to do something different from the main show to feel worthy of being the plot of a special and while of course it is far to early to tell on if this specials plot will be one of the better plots in this new show there does need to be alot of improvement as the plot does feel a bit to kid friendly even for Thomas however tho this plot does feel true to the Thomas franchise with alot of the characters acting how you think that they would with the plot itself still being a lot of fun to watch with the specials plot also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this special is Harry Sparkes as Thomas , Chris Woodworth as Henry and Django Bevan as Gordon. Also starring in this special is Oscar Elliott as Percy , Iliana Vargas Brock as Rosie , Elliott Garcia as Bruno , Nanak Phlora as Deepak , Gene Foad as Sir Topham Hatt , Rory Barnett as Farmer McColl and a Workman , Rowan Alltraine as Kid A , Greta Railton as Kid B ,Jenny Fitzpatrick as a Woman and Henry Golding as The Narrator.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special was in all honesty not that bad. You can tell that the actors in this special are doing there best which had to have been hard for them as alot of them are actual kids and it is that does help to make the acting truly standout as the characters that are meant to sound like kids like for example Thomas and Percy do sound exactly like how you think they would and while some characters like for example do have good voices like for example Gordon who does sound quite pompous which is true to his character Rosie on the other hand doesn't have a voice that fits her character as here she is given an Indian accent which makes no sense as Rosie is meant to be either British or American if the makers of this show wanted to have an Indian character in the show then why not keep Nia. With the best actor in the whole special being Harry Sparkes as Thomas as he does sound like what you think a more modern version of Thomas would sound like and while of course he's not going to match up with alot of the other actors who have played Thomas in CGI form for the first time playing the character he does sound really good and he does give the character a really youthful sounding voice that you could very easily see him becoming what this next generation think Thomas is meant to sound like like how those of us who great up in the eighties and nineties think that he should sound like Sir Ringo Starr or how other generations think that he should sound like the actor that was playing him when they grew up watching the show. With the acting that's in this special not really being helped by the act that this specials script isn't that good as it doesn't give any of this specials actors anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really goes harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very special.

With the specials animation being a huge step up interms of quality from what we got in All Engines Go as thee CGI used in this special does look really good with there being alot of thought and effort gone into the specials animation and it is something that does show as the special from a visual standpoint does look really good. However tho this special does the same thing that the last CGI Thomas special did and that's have the characters bounding everytime they talk and it once again gets to the point where it is distracting and isn't needed as it makes no sense for the trains to be bounding every single time they talk to each other but on the plus side tho the characters designs while they will make some die hard fans unhappy do look really good with Percy having more of a rounded face when compared to somebody like Gordon for example with even the characters having the same coloured eyes as there paintwork with Thomas having blu eyes and Henry having green eyes for example this is something that could make alot of the die hard fans unhappy as it is an unneeded change to designs that didn't really need to be changed in the first place but at the same time tho they are changes that work within the context of this special and this new show, however tho the constant bouncing when the characters talk is something that needed to be gone as it wasn't needed and it just looks ugly and with the makers of this special doin there best to try to recapture that classic Thomas look and feel then they should have gone the whole way and removed something that the fans of classic Thomas hate. 

As was mentioned at the vert start of this review this special is the first piece of animated Thomas media since the release of the final All Engines Go special. With it quite frankly being great to get back to something that felt like true Thomas as while yes this special is bit to kid friendly or it's own good there enough good things in it that you do kind of forgive that aspect of the special where as with All Engines Go even tho it wasn't as kid friendly as this special is the fact that the makers of that show had the characters openly jumping from track to track and acting like anything other then engines it does go a great way to show you that Mattel are trying to recapture the fans that they lost when they put out All Engines Go. As while yes fair enough this special is never going to be as good as the great seasons of this show are there is still a clear attempt being made with this special and hopefully with the new show to make something that does feel as true to the spirit of Thomas then what we go in something like Sodor Sings Together for example as that special is the official finale to All Engines Go and yet it doesn't feel like it where as here with this special you do get the feeling that they are starting something new and it is something that does have the potential to work if they just avoid everything that they did in that show and stick with what worked in the original show and the original stories as it's all there in both the show and stories to make a great show. This is a special that quite frankly I can see just as much kids and adults liking it for totally different reasons as the kids will love it due to the fact that it does have these likable and quirky characters that to them will be brand new and the adults will love it because of the fact that it does feel like true Thomas and not just the version of the show that they grew up with but the franchise as a whole with this being something that All Engines Go seemed to scared to be as they sent more time on having the characters act like anything other then trains that are doing there work and spent more time with them goofing off and that's great for one episode but alot of All Engines Go was like that and that's not true to the Thomas franchise at all.

This special is actually unique in that it actually made it's debut on Youtube which is something of a first of Thomas & Friends as usually the specials would appear first on TV or streaming. Yet here whilst there is a streaming and TV premiere due for the special with the special appearing on Netflix on September 30th and on TV sometime in October the fact that is appeared first on the official Thomas & Friends Youtube channel is something that could either be seen as being a good or a bad thing it's a good things as like it or not alot of kids these days especially the shows target audience are watching more Youtube then they are regular TV and therefor having the special appear on there first does make alot of sense as it'll mean that they'll have more of a chance to watch it. However it is also a bad thing as it now means that when the special does appear on both Netflix and on TV that kids won't have the same incentive to watch it as why should they when they can just load up Youtube and watch it and not have to worry about buffering time or he adverts coming in and interrupting the special this is in turn going to affect how the show does interms of TV ratings and how many people watch it as while yes alot of people have Netflix accounts but alot more people have access to Youtube this is something that the makers of this special had to know otherwise why would they do this kind of a release strategy for the special when having it air on TV is something that has worked well for the franchise for decades and if something is good it won't matter where the kids see it first as there going to be drawn to the fact that it's on TV bottom line being that it is an odd way to release a special that's meant to essentially be the first episode of a new show this way as now there is no way to know if the special was going to do good on either streaming or on TV as now it's been dropped somewhere where we alot more people can watch it for free. 

There is one thing that really doesn't work in this special and that's the fact they feel the need to over explain who alot of the classic characters. Which fair enough is something that would have been done for the new fans and not really for the older fan but even if you watched All Engines Go you still going to know who these characters and heck they even give Henry the wrong job in this special as it's Percy's job to pull the mail train and not Henry's with them even making Henry the always afraid character that he was back in the earlier CGI seasons when anybody who has watched the classic show and the CGI era show will be able to tell you that whilst yes Henry can get scared sometimes there are more examples of him being a strong bada*s character who will do anything for his friends even if it means risking breaking himself down because of it. Look to be fair there is a chance that they could give Percy and Henry the correct jobs when the series starts of proper but you only get one chance to make a good first impression and this special didn't do that when they got Henry wrong ad heck just out of the model seasons of the show alone there are at the very least only two episodes when he was worried but there are more examples of him being cheeky and more examples of him being hot headed and being this strong engine bottom line being here if the makers of this special wanted to truly capture the spirit of the show and what made it so good in the first place then they should have gone all out, as having Henry start of the special being worried about something is something that could have worked if it played a part in the special but it doesn't it's literally in just the one scene near the start of the special and that's it with the special not giving Henry much of a chance to show of other aspects of his personality which is fine for the older fans as there going to know what else Henry is like but the young kids won't.

Now then this special has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly thirty minuets and thirty one seconds. This a fairly decent running time for the special to have as the special doesn't really have all that much to set up due to the fact that the characters and the world are that iconic that alot of people will know all about them in the first lace but at the same time tho it would have been nice if the special did take some time from there musical numbers and give it to setting up some things in regards to the specials plot and how these versions of the character differ from the versions that alot of us no and love in the first place with the special having more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. However tho the special really doesn't use it's running tome all that wisely as the special really doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot which to be fair is kind of expected but at the same time given the fact that this is a new version of the show you do want to start out the new show with your best foot forward and having a special that doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot with the message of Thomas feeling that he has to do everything on his own not really working as the plot doesn't give that idea enough time to breathe before they start to wrap it up with the makers of this special being more focused on giving Thomas musical numbers then they are in giving us a well developed plot. This is something that does also effect the special character development as outside of Thomas none of the specials characters get any kind of character development which is kind of understandable as he is the main character of the special but at the same time tho it would have been nice if say Percy or Gordon got some character development and even Thomas's character development doesn't feel earned as not enough time is spent on making it feel well thought out in the first place with the makers of this special being more focused on making sure that all of the engine characters bounce when they talk then they in giving the special some much needed characters development but I really will admit that this special really does have some really good pacing to it tho. 

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I gave to actually talk about the actual comedy that's  actually featured / presented to us in this very special well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special was in all honesty not that bad. The specials comedy is decent as we do get scenes with Thomas being cheeky to Gordon which is always fun to see but at the same time that's about the only bit of comedy that we get in the episode with the episode feeling more like a drama alot of the time and while this is understandable as this is a special after all there did still need to be some more lighthearted moments with the characters in the special. With the best joke in the whole entire special being when Thomas is cheeky to Gordon just by annoying him as Thomas is trying to get Gordon to let him pull this big train which for some odd reason Gordon call an engine but that is something that only works due to the fact that it does feel true to Thomas's character in both the books and the show as he would be cheeky to other engines especially if they had something that he wanted and therefor having him be a bit cheeky to Gordon does make sense for his character this is something that doesn't make it all that funny tho but compared to the rest of the special that joke is funny with there being more stuff in this special and in that one scene with Thomas being cheeky to Gordon that little kids will find funny and is something that does make sense as the main target audience for this audience has always been and will always be little kids with the rest of the specials jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall this is a decent start to Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories as it does show the potential that this new show does have not only in how it handles the characters but also in how good it could be where as compared with All Engines Go you knew right from frame one that hat show was going to be bad here tho there is still that hope that this could be a really good show in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very special in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very special really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.

Thomas And Friends TV Series "Thomas And The Royal Engine" Review

Thomas The Tank Engine as a show had been going on since the eighties with it only ending in 2021 and while many do rightfully think that the last episode of season 24 was the shows final episode; The fact it that's not true as the last episode to be produced wasn't an episode of the show it really was a special made to celebrate the franchises seventy fifth anniversary and that's that very special that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so then join me as I review the special that marked the end of the franchise with the special in question being called simply just "Thomas And The Royal Engine" enjoy.

The plot of this special is The Fat Controller and Thomas are invited to a special ceremony in London by none other then the then Queen of England herself. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special was in all honesty not that bad. With the specials plot being a decent plot that does do a good job of setting itself apart from when the last few series of the show were all about just by sticking to what worked in the show as while there is mention of Thomas going abroad in the special the special mainly focused on the UK setting. This is something that does work in the specials favor as that's what the fans of the show would want to see in Thomas episode and while yes it would have been nice if the plot did include characters from Thomas's adventures on the whole as this is meant to celebrate seventy five years of the franchise as a whole it's not something that was needed and while it does make from a marketing point of view for Thomas to be the centre of the plot given that it this special was meant to celebrate seventy five years since the release of the first book it would made just as much sense for Gordon , Henry and Edward to take centre stage with the specials plot admittedly being a bit on the thin side as there is nothing to the episodes plot that makes it worthy of being a full blown special in it's own right with the plot of this episode also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this episode is John Hasler as Thomas , Keith Wickham as Henry and Gordon and Nigel Pilkington as Percy. Also starring in this episode is Teresa Gallagher as Emily , Rob Rackstraw as James , The Thin Clergyman and the Mainland Engine Cleaners , Rachael Miller as Rebecca and Prince Charles , Rosamund Pike as Duchess , Colin McFarlane as Bulgy and Beresford , Keith Wickham as The Fat Controller , Dowager Hatt , Thomas' Crew and the Mainland Stationmaster and Sharon Miller as Queen Elizabeth II.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special was in all honesty not that bad. All of the series regular actors do indeed do a really good job of voicing their characters for what would be the final time in the show with them all getting a small amount of time to show us just why they were good in the show to begin with and as is tradition with Thomas we do have a celebrity voicing a one off character with us having the delightful Rosamund Pike as Duchess with her doing a really good job in the episode as a whole. With the best actor in the whole entire episode being John Hasler as Thomas which granted might be something of a cliche thing to say as he is playing the main character of the show but it's also something that is true as he does get alot to do as the character outside of him of just spouting a few catchphrases with John having a good voice for Thomas as it does capture both his more youthful nature and how wise he is at the same time with this being something that wouldn't have worked if the character had a voice that made him sound to young with John even having some really good charm and charisma that really does shine through in his performance in this special. With the acting that's in this very special really being helped by the fact that the script for this special is just so good that all this specials actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very special. 

Doing the animation for this special is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Jam Filled Toronto. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special was in all honesty not that bad. The specials animation was quite frankly alot more better then what it really had any right to be as by all rights the animation in this special should have been really bad as the animation in season 24 was pretty bad but no infact it's actually alot more better then that as you can tell the makers of this special did put alot of thought and effort in to making the specials animation look as good as it could have been. As while yes the backgrounds do lack alot of detail which does make it hard to work out on if the characters are meant to be on the mainland or on Sodor but on the plus side the characters don't bounce as much when there talking this time around with the characters remaining still which is very pleasant to see and while this specials animation was never going to as good as the animation in a feature film would for the fact that it is a made for TV special there is alot more thought and effort gone into the animation then say something from Paw Patrol as you can see all of the love for the show that the animators have in each and every frame however tho the thing that lets down this specials animation is the fact that we don't get to see alot of different types of environments in the specials as alot of it is set in the country side which does get a bit boring to look at after a while and it would have given the animators the chance to show of more backgrounds if they did give us a more a variety of backgrounds it also would have helped if the specials animation had more of a chance to do some really creative things that show of just how good the animation is. 

As was mentioned at the start of this review whilst the series itself did technically end with season 24 this was the last special to be fully developed. Therefor this is the shows technical final episode as the series would be rebooted with that dreadful All Engines Go right after this special came out with it being weird that after thirty to forty years on the air that the show would come to an end as the Thomas TV series is just one of those shows that you think would never go away as the people that grew up watching it and liking could become fans of it and therefor write episodes for the show and thus inspiring the next generation of kids to do the exact same thing and yet someone possibly and Mattel decided that kids weren't enjoying this show when truth be told they weren't enjoying the bad stories that made up season 22 to 24. With this episode not even feeling like a finale episode as there's no sense of this is the end for the characters that you typically get when your watching the final episode of a show and heck not even all of the characters in the show show up for this special therefor they don't get that big send off moment that alot of the other characters in the special get which is something that makes you wonder if the the choice to cancel the show was made after this special was made as you know that the makers of the special would have gone out of there way to make it feel like a true finale if that was choice was made prior to the special being made but either way it was a bit sad to see this truly iconic show end knowing what comes after it isn't going to save the franchise but is rather going to do more harm to it then good, with the only way for Mattel to fix the mistakes that they made to be just to give us decent stories and that audience that you've lost would have come back as the show and the format wasn't broken.

There is a part of this episode that is shall we say quite infamous as it does feature someone who was then a member of the royal family but not long after recording his opening for the episode would start to distance himself from his family. Look to be fair having a member of the royal family open the episode is a good way to start the episode of as it is about Thomas going to meet them but it is something that hasn't aged all that well given what happens in real life therefor it would have made more sense if they got someone who was still in the royal family to do the opening like maybe Charles of William or maybe even Kate to do it as they are still quite high up in the royal family or maybe one of the lesser known royals as it's not really something that would have required a more well known family member to do it in the first place. Another issue with the episode is that it spends so much time in building up London and yet we spend a a grand total of around two minuets there at the end of the episode with the rest of the episode bein spent on showing the characters going to London which does make you wonder why they chose to shout out London by name and have the characters go there as they could have had the royal party go to Sodor and nothing would need to be changed plot wise and yet by shifting the location to London and not really showing us alot of the location it does make that whole idea feel like the waste of a good idea as it would have been fun to see how the makers of this show interpret something like the London Underground for example or even showing The Fat Controller being driven to Buckingham Palace for his meeting with Thomas being carried by lorry which is something that would have allowed the makers of the episode to give us a few shots of the characters going around other famous London landmarks bottom line being there is alot that they could have done with the London location and yet they don't do it all for no good reason.

Duchess as a new character was pretty fun as she is basically just a female version of Spencer with the thing being that she is forgetful. With her always forgetting something which in the case of this special was forgetting to have her safety valve checked and yet she's also always in a rush and worrying about several different things at once which does make her kind of a fun character and one that if the show did indeed continue you could very easily see her coming back into the show on a semi-regular basis as there are stories that you could tell with her character that don't involve the royal family being there and yet the character only shows up about four times in the whole special this is something that does go to show you that the makers of tis special did know what they doing. As with just four scenes they manage to create a character that does leave an impression on us the audience and while OK fair enough she's not the best written character however this is something that could also be said for alot of the new characters in the latter episodes of the show with Rebecca being a very good example of this as the show barely used her after they set her up as a character and yet here wit Duchess they do have the basis of a good character and yet the character never really appears after this special when it would have been super fun to see her again even in All Engines Go which given how they did the characters on that show would have been where she might have fit in the best. The character is one that did have lots of potential in the show to be a really good character as while she doesn't get alot of screen time in this special the time that she does get does make you want to see her more and see what her interactions with say Gordon would be like or given the fact that she's a female more kinder version of Spencer why not show us what there interactions are like and with the new Thomas reboot coming out in a few weeks why not have or a version of her be apart of the cast for that show and show us more of what her personality is.

Now then this episode has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly twenty two minuets and thirty six seconds. Which was a pretty solid running time for this special to have but at the same time tho this special really could have done with being alot longer then that just to make sure that all of the main characters from the show not only got there chance to say goodbye to the audience but also allow the characters more time in London as you very easily could have gotten this specials running time up to about thirty or forty minuets and with that added screen time it would have allowed for the plot to breathe alot more as with it's actual running time it does feel like that the special is just rushing from one plot point to the next with the special having more then enough plot there to cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet even with the episode being as long as it is it still doesn't use its running time all that wisely as while the specials plot is as well developed as it was ever going to be the plot still does feel underbaked with this mainly due to the fact that it is now the official series finale as the special does spend alot of time with just The Fat Controller and Thomas and not enough time on adding things to the plot that make it feel more developed with the makers oft his special being more focused on showing us alot of the countryside then it is in giving us a well developed plot. This is something that is also kind of true for the specials character development as while both The Fat Controller and Thomas don't really need any kind of character development due ton them having gotten it in the previous episodes of the show characters like Duchess and Beresford don't get any kind of character development and while it's understandable as to why Beresford doesn't get any as he's only in the one scene Duchess is meant to be a main character and yet she doesn't get any kind of character development with the makers of this special being more focused on giving us references to past episodes then they are in giving the characters some character development but I really will admit that this special really does have some really bad pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy special that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very special was in all honesty really good. With alot of the comedy in this special being more cute then anything else which is by no means a bad things as that is the type of comedy that this show did do best be it Bulgy saying that the mail would have arrived n time if it had been delivered by bus which is very true to his character or Duchess being convinced that Thomas has her coaches bottom line being there are alot of cute and funny moments here in the special. With the best joke in the whole special being when The Fat Controller is getting dressed in the morning and he opens his wardrobe and we see that the only hats he has are the same ones that he wears everyday and yet to top it of even his new hat is just the same hat that joke it just a cute joke that whilst yes you can see it coming as other films and TV shows have done that exact same joke before now it is still a funny joke and it is sone that is oddly befitting for his character as we can imagine him just having rows and rows of the same top hat all over the place and therefor picturing him trying to choose one to wear not just for meeting the Queen but also just for going to work on a daily basis is a pretty funny idea in it's own right and seeing the Thomas team put there own stamp on that joke is something that does make the joke feel kind of new all over again with the rest of the specials jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall as a series finale this special isn't all that good as it doesn't wrap the show up at all but as an anniversary special then it does do it's job of reminding us all of why we fell n love with Thomas in the first place as the special does feel like a special that was written for the fans by the fans in my freaking pinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very special in this very review and a such tat really does mean that this very special really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.

Wednesday: Woe Thyself Review

Everyone knows who The Addams Family are be from their various TV shows to there various movies or even the original comic strips amongst many other things. There is however one thing that cannot be denied and that is the fact that the Wednesday TV show helped to really make the characters popular again this time for a more modern audience and it something that did work as the show is currently filming it's third season and well I thought that i'd take a look back at one of the more out there episodes from the shows second season and so then join me as I review the episode that might as well be called "Freaky Friday Goth Girl Edition" with the episode in question being called simply just "Woe Thyself" enjoy.

The plot of this episode is when Wednesday and Enid switch bodies after Enid interrupts a meeting that Wednesday is having the ghost of a dead professor with te duo having a few hours to put things right before they both die. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty not that bad. With the episodes plot for the most part being very much a filler plot with it really tying into the main plot towards the end the episode which to be frank isn't a bad thing as it does give us very much a calm before the storm episode. However tho this episode really could have been a bit more focused as plot wise the episode does seem to be all over the place as the episode has to juggle so many plots from the season which in this case does leave the main plot fighting for screen time and whilst yes this is very much a nothing plot that doesn't mean that it had to be left fighting for your attention as it should have been the main focus of the episode and not left feeling like an afterthought as when the episode does focus on the Wednesday and Enid plot that's when the episode gets to be more fun and that's exactly what an episode like this one needed to be it needed to be fun and yet for one reason or another the episode can't be that fun as when the episode does start to get more fun with its plot it cuts to another plot which is great for the seasons long story arc but it's not great for the episodes main plot with the plot of the episode also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. The fact that we have good acting in this episode is something that really isn't all that surprising as this show does have good acting in all of it's episodes and the fact that it's managed to get an actual dame in Dame Joanna Lumley does speak to how good the acting is as she didn't have to do this show and yet she did it anyway with her turning in a good performance in this episode with the same thing being true for alot of this episodes actors as well as they all turn in a bunch of really good performances in this episode. With the best actor in the whole entire episode being Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair as both she and Jenna Ortega have a really tough job to do in this episode as they both have to play there regular characters but then they have to play each others characters whilst still making it apparent that it's there own characters and while Jenna does also pull this off quite easily Emma is clearly having the most fun with it as she makes the character of Wednesday still very much feel like Enid with her even doing an impression of the voice that Jenna uses for the character which was something that she didn't have to do and yet it's something that sells you on the fact that this is still Wednesday only no it's in Enid's body with her having alot of charm and charisma that really does shine through in this episode. With the acting that's in this episode really being helped by the fact that this episodes script is just so good that all this episodes actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very episode.

Doing the CGI for this episode really is the legends and the really greats that are currently over at Folks VFX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very episode was in all honesty really good. While the series isn't really known for it's high quality CGI as The Hyde in season one looks so bad here in this episode the effects do look decent with the makers of the episode hiding both The Hyde and Enid's wolf firm mostly in shadows which does do a good job of hiding the effects and making it look all the more better. Yet the episode gives Isaac a really long obviously fake tongue when he's licking the jar of Professor Orloff and while the effects used to bring Professor Orloff to live look really good the effect on the tongue looks a little bit to fake as while there is no way that they could have done practically there could have been a bit more time spend on it to make it look better and while yes The Hyde itself does still look pretty bad in this episode the fact that it is mostly hidden away in shadows does make it more of a better effect as it does show that the makers of this episode had learnt from there mistakes last season where they have the creature be seen in well lit areas which does make the effect itself look really bad but here by hiding it a bit more it does mean that they can get away with making it look a little bit bad which is something that can't be said for the long tongue effect with this being ashame as the effect of Professor Orloff does look really good and heck one could even say that it's the best effect of the season.

The best way to describe this episode is it's essentially The Addams Family version of Freaky Friday as both this episode and that film do share a very similar set up where two characters switch bodies and have to put things right before a certain time with them both learning something that they didn't know about the other in the process. In the case of this episode Enid learns that the reason why Wednesday has been shutting her out all season is due to the fact that she's foreseen Enid being killed and Wednesday is actively trying to stop that from that happening and Wednesday learns that Enid fears being an alpha due to the fact that she thinks it will make her be all alone again something which Wednesday vows to not let happen. While yes the thing that Wednesday learns is a very basic thing for the character to learn it is something that does work for the character as the character had been cold to Enid all season long at this point something Agnes did take delight in reminding Enid all about, heck this is something that does work for these kinds of episodes as it then gives the characters the chance to literally walk a mile in each others shows and while we the audience don't get to learn anything new about either character because of it the fact that the characters get to find out things that they might not have found out otherwise is something that does prove that this type of episode could work, however tho with that being said it is odd that a show featuring The Addams Family would do a body swap episode as quite literally none of the shows and movies had done anything like this before as it's something that doesn't really work in the world of The Addams Family and while it does kind of work here due to how they have it happen it is still an odd thing to see in anything that's related to The Addams Family.

This episode is the very definition of the calm before the storm episode as alot of this episode is very comedy focused and is very happy go lucky. While yes it does get more serious towards the end of the episode alot of the time it is just the characters trying to work out how to get out of this crazy situation and this is where the episode does shine as this show is usually very dark and vert bleak and while that is fitting for The Addams Family sometime you do want something that is a little bit more lighthearted whilst still getting all of the things that you'd come to expect from the show and this is something that this episode does do really well as we get both Wednesday and Enid getting into goofy situations whilst in each others bodies which is alot of fun to see as we get to see Wednesday as Enid breaking up with Enid's boyfriend because she knows that he's cheating on her but she can't do it in the way that Wednesday would she has to do it in the way that Enid would. The same thing is true with Enid as she has a few scenes with either Morticia or Morticia and the rest of The Addams Family with Enid being scared that she might be found out ad yet none of them suspect her for a second with Enid not being to able to tell anyone that she's not herself which in off itself does lead to some pretty funny moments during the dinner scene with Gomez punishing Pugsley by either putting him in an Iron Maiden or in the torture rack something which he happily accepts, this episode is filled to the brim with goofy moments like this and they oddly don't feel put of place in this kind of episode as this episode is meant to be a calm before the storm episode and therefor of course things are going to be alot more lighthearted and while given the fact that this episode six of an eight episode season and therefor the show should have been building more to the end of the season taking this little break away from the main plot of the season does work.

While this episode does mostly avoid the season long plot it does take the time to address this time as the episodes subplot. As we do get to see Tyler and his family go back to Willow Hill hospital so that Isaac can finish the experiment on his sister which we find out in Tyler's mother with those scenes being the only scenes in the entire episode where the season long plot gets addressed and that's great as we have had a few episodes in this season that put the season long plot as the main plot of the episode therefore it was great to see a more lighthearted plot take the main focus with it only tieing into the main plot of the season near the end of the episode when Agnes sneak off to Willow Hill with Tyler and his family with Wednesday and Enid having to come to her rescue and that's really it and that's all we needed to have for the main plot of the season. As it could have been pointless for the makers of this episode to include anything that would add to it this late in the game therefor having the season long plot take the backseat to a more goofy kind of plot is something that does work for the episode and while of course the episode would have worked just as well if the season long plot was the main focus as you could have had the bod swapping plot happen with any to character and it would would have worked out just the same having it happen with Enid and Wednesday does also make alot of sense but with this being said the episode would have been all the more better if the main plot with Tyler was the main focus point of the episode just due to where this episode falls in the seasons running order as if it was done much more earlier on in the season then having the more goofy plot take centre stage would have made sense but here at episode six of an eight episode season there did need to be more of a focus on the season long plot.

Now then this episode has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and nine minuets and sixteen seconds. Whilst this is pretty much the bogstandard running time for this show to have this episode really didn't need to be all that long as there was nothing in the episodes plot that demanded that it be this long as you very easily could have had this episode come in at well under one hour just by cutting out alot of the pointless stuff in the episode that add nothing to either the episodes main plot or the season long plot and yet the episode does throw so many things at you all of which are filler scenes that it makes you wonder why the makers of this episode gave this episode a longer running with the episode having more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time in the first place. Yet with the episode having this long running time it still doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the episode doesn't take the time to fully develop its plot and whilst this is still a really bad thing for this kind of episode tho the plot didn't really need to be all that well developed as all you needed to know was how Enid and Wednesday switched bodies in the first place and how long they have to switch back and that's really it and both of those things are thing that episode explains to us any way yet it is still more clear that the makers of this episode gave more thought and effort into the pointless filler scenes then they did in the episodes plot development. The same thing it could be argued is true for the episodes characters development as while both Wednesday and Enid do grow as characters as they both find out things that they other has been keeping a secret from them and they both learn from that none of the episodes other character do grow as characters and wile it could be could be argued that Tyler doesn't really need to grow as a character but given the fact that he is on of the main characters of the episodes side plot he or any member of his family should have started to grow as characters but I really will admit that this episode really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

With this episode being alot more goofier with its setup then other episode it does make sense that there would be more of a focus on comedy then what there usually is as nine times out of ten this show focuses more on action and horror and while both of those are still present in the episode there is more of clearer lean towards comedy with alot of the main characters in the main plot of the episode getting a chance to be really funny be with Enid being really sarcastic as Wednesday or Wednesday herself being alot more fun and outgoing as Enid. With the best joke in the whole entire episode being the scene where Enid as Wednesday decides to get revenge for how Wednesday as written the character based in her in her book by dressing up in brightly coloured clothes and make up and going into the schools courtyard hugging and being friendly to every one whilst also dancing this was just a fun way to start of the episode as right away it lets you know that something is up with the character and yet they revisit the scene later on in the episode Enid then gets a reminder that Wednesday is quite literally allergic to color when she starts coming out in a rash which is just the cherry on top for that whole joke with the rest of the episodes jokes being just as good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.  

Overall whilst there are more better plot focused episodes in this second season of the show just interms of having a plot that knows full well that it's goofy and having all of the main actors be in on it those really are things that do make this episode alot of fun to watch in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very episode in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very episode really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
